Virgil van Dijk has done this to every Liverpool player - and Joel Matip knows it

Joel Matip has revealed how Virgil van Dijk continues to improve EVERY Liverpool player.

Matip has struck up a centre-back partnership with Van Dijk as the Reds strive for Premier League and Champions League glory.

Van Dijk played a key part in Liverpool's 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday when he helped prevent Moussa Sissoko from scoring late on.

Jose Mourinho thinks Porto have one big advantage over Liverpool in Champions League tie

And Matip believes the Dutchman is the "complete" defender.

“He’s a great defender,” said the Cameroonian.

“And being around him, I think everybody improves. He has had a big impact on the improvement. It’s great to play (with) him. He’s a complete defender and he knows what to do.

“Every defender does things a little bit differently. You always need some time to really know each other.

"This is normal. I think we need this time in a good way and this is working most of the time quite well.”

Matip's run of 12 consecutive starts is his longest such sequence since arriving at Anfield on a free transfer from Schalke nearly three years ago.

And, speaking to Premier League productions, he said: “It’s not too bad; I always know that I have to improve but it’s a good feeling to be on the pitch and to play.

“If you win it’s also not too bad. I’m happy.

"But you know you have always to improve, to get better, to be part of the team.”
