Virgil van Dijk hails world class Liverpool team-mate after Newcastle victory

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk heaped praise on Roberto Firmino after the Brazilian came off the bench to inspire a 3-1 comeback victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Jetro Willems stunned Anfield by firing Steve Bruce's side into an early with a brilliant strike but the Reds responded in style.

Mane netted twice before the interval and Mohamed Salah added the third after an exquisite piece of skill from the outstanding Roberto Firmino, who had started on the bench.

Firmino also provided the assist for Mane's second, and he proved a constant threat to the Newcastle defence with his movement in the final third.

And defender Virgil Van Dijk paid tribute to Firmino after the game, telling BT Sport: "He's a very important player for all of us.

"I know how difficult it is for a centre-back if a striker's dropping in position, and he makes life difficult for any defender in the world.

"He's so good and I'm so happy he's in my team."

Victory was Liverpool's fifth in an impressive start to the league season and was the perfect warm-up for the start of their Champions League defence at Napoli next week.

On the game as a whole, and the continuation of Liverpool's perfect start, Van Dijk added: "Obviously it's very important to get the three points again.

"To go 1-0 down here is not good but we reacted the right way and (it's a) good victory."

Liverpool will now turn their attention to Champions League, with Jurgen Klopp's side travelling Italy to face Napoli in their group-stage opener on Tuesday night.
