Virgil van Dijk explains why everyone wants to see Liverpool fail after Premier League title success

Virgil van Dijk has admitted everyone in football will be hoping to knock Liverpool off their perch this season and warned his side they face "challenging times" ahead.

Van Dijk, who helped Liverpool reach a Champions League final within six months of joining them, then went one step further a year later and helped the Reds to their sixth European Cup.

But it was last season that will live long in the memory of Van Dijk and all those associated with the club as Liverpool were crowned league champions for the first time in 30 years.

The Reds have now added the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the Premier League title to the Champions League trophy that they lifted on June 1 last year.

But Van Dijk believes the Premier League champions now face "challenging times" ahead because "everyone wants to see you fall" when you are successful.

"I think trying to stay at the top is the hardest thing to do," the Dutchman told Eddie Hearn's 'No Passion No Point' podcast.

Before continuing: "Everyone wants to see you fall when you reach the top. That is what life is about, especially these days.

"For me I want to give everything I have got until I retire and then have no regrets after.

"I don't want any regrets afterwards, I think that would be the worst feeling you can have.

“It is going to be challenging times coming up. We are champions - something that took a while. We should enjoy the moment and go for it."
