Virgil van Dijk drops hint he may return sooner than expected with encouraging video

Virgil van Dijk has posted a video on social media showing promising signs he is recovering well from his long-term injury.

The Liverpool centre-back suffered cruciate ligament damage when he was clattered by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the Merseyside Derby in October.

It was expected he would miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery, but the Dutchman has been working hard behind the scenes on his recovery.

And on Monday he shared footage of himself undergoing a number of activities on Twitter along with the caption: "Step by step.."

In the video, Van Dijk can be seen doing kick-ups with a ball, along with weight work and cardio exercises.

It remains unclear exactly when we can expect to see the 29-year-old return to first-team action, and it seems as though there is still a long road ahead.

But Reds fans will be reassured by how quickly Van Dijk has resumed ball-work, and he appeared to be in a positive mood in the video, smiling and laughing while working with his trainer.

Van Dijk was recently included in FIFA's World 11 for the second year running following his superb performances in helping Liverpool win the Premier League title last season.

And it would come as a huge boost to the team if he does manage to return to the fold before the end of the season.

So far they do not appear to be missing him too much, however, with Jurgen Klopp's side top of the table by four points following their thumping 7-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

They host struggling West Brom on Boxing Day before travelling to Newcastle on December 30 to round off what has been another superb year.
