Virgil van Dijk Celtic 'bite' claim as Ryan Stevenson left annoyed by current Hoops star for 'rolling about'

Former Hearts and Partick Thistle midfielder Ryan Stevenson has clamied ex-Celtic hero Virgil van Dijk bit him when they played against each other.

And he feels the mentality of the current Parkhead defence is miles off what it used to be after their 10 In A Row quest was given another jolt in a shock draw at home to St Johnstone.

Chris Kane looked to have Saints on the road to victory with a strike 11 minutes from time but Mohamed Elyounoussi came off the bench to steal a point.

That's of little comfort to under-pressure Neil Lennon though and Stevenson pointed to an incident involving Kane and French Hoops defender Christopher Jullien to explain how some Celtic players aren't competing like champions.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound in the wake of that result, Stevenson said: "Chris Kane got booked for a tackle on Jullien, and Jullien is just rolling about.

"You look back to Celtic’s centre-halves, I remember we played van Dijk when I was at Partick Thistle and he bit me on the back of the head.

"He’s that keen to win the ball. He actually turned around, and he’s like, ‘that ball is there, I’m winning that, I’m the Celtic centre-half.’

"There’s no way if I’m putting one on him, or you go back to John Hughes when he was there, if I put one on John Hughes he’s not rolling about on the ground.

"He’s getting back up and saying, ‘come on, let’s go’.

"There’s just nothing. It comes from the goalkeeper coming out, him dominating, him pushing his back three up.

"With no fans there you should be able to hear every player screaming at each other, the goalkeeper pushing his centre-halves up."
