BBC pundit shares brilliant analysis of 'strutting' Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool's win at Crystal Palace

Virgil van Dijk's imperious display in Liverpool's late 2-1 win at Crystal Palace has captured the mood of an iconic Reds banner.

Liverpool fans are well-known for the wide variety of witty remarks they adorn on their flags at matches but one of the favourites among the support-base simply states: “Them Scousers again.”

A version of it was famously captured on camera ahead of the Champions League final against AC Milan in Istanbul, complete with four European Cups, so at least two modifications have been required since.

A similar vein of self-confidence was exuded from Reds Dutch centre-back in south London on Saturday to prompt Garth Crooks to pick him in his Premier League Team of the Week with the BBC Sport pundit declaring: “ Virgil van Dijk was at it again.”

He added: “This time, he was strutting around Selhurst Park as if he owned the place.

“Whenever Van Dijk plays, Liverpool always seem to retain a sense of calm regardless of the circumstances.

“Crystal Palace played their best football for some time, created chances and missed them, and seemed to suffer from the occasion more than their visitors. Strange, that.”

Meanwhile, Van Dijk's team-mate Sadio Mane , who netted Liverpool's opening goal, was also included in Crooks' XI.

The 61-year-old said: “Sadio Mane is fast becoming my favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award. His performances so far this season have been wonderful.

“Against Crystal Palace he was, once again, Liverpool's biggest threat. He refuses to give any defence a moment's rest.

“That said, the Senegal international might have had a hat-trick in a game that could have finished 3-3.

“Instead, Liverpool tightened their grip on that elusive Premier League title - and much of that is down to Mane.”
