Viral videos show cars and vans getting stranded in flooded Nottinghamshire ford

Viral footage of cars and vans getting stuck in a "notorious" Nottinghamshire ford has been viewed millions of times online.

And the teenager behind the videos has spoken out about how he has even had to wade into the water in the past to help stranded motorists.

Rufford Ford was once named as the most common place in the country for drivers to get stuck.

The area regularly gets flooded with deep water during heavy rainfall, and can become a pastime for tourists visiting nearby Rufford Abbey to watch cars drive through the water.

On many occasions, vehicles become stuck in the water after their engines cut out - leading to emergency services being called to rescue operations.

One person who regularly visits the site to watch the drama unfold is 18-year-old Ben Gregory, who has been visiting the site since he was a child.

The student, from Melton Mowbray, says he has been taking footage of incidents since he was 11 years old, before setting up a YouTube channel which now has 25,000 subscribers.

Speaking about the success of his channel, he says videos of the hotspot ford have become so popular and have caused his YouTube page to 'explode'.

He said: “I first went to the ford aged three or four and I’ve been filming there since I was 11.

“I didn't know what YouTube was back then, it was just a hobby and it is quite nostalgic for me. It has always been notorious for people getting stuck.

“I am at university at the moment in Leicester studying business management and I put one of the videos on YouTube around six months ago. I didn’t expect anything from it and for a month I only got a few hundred views.

“Then it exploded and it is now watched by people all over the world. It is unbelievable.

“I am getting a good half a million views a day, it is growing like mad. I feel like it’s a niche and I pounced on it.”

Mr Gregory's most watched video, which features a van getting stuck in the ford, in Rufford Lane, has been seen 2.3 million times.

He spends hours filming and editing the footage for his channel.

He added: “Whenever there is a heavy downpour I will be there for a good 14 hours from around 5am to 7pm. I take my packed lunch with me and I’ve got to know the locals.

“I love it and I am doing quite well for myself too. I needed a bit of money over the summer so this is really helping.

“Whenever I am free I get straight down there, sometimes up to three or four times a week.

“Because we’ve had loads of rain this month I’ve been down there quite frequently.”

He said he has had negative reactions from drivers in the past, including “hand gestures” from some.

But he added that “it can be quite sensitive if someone has truly broken down” and he will often help if needed.

Recently he waded into the water himself to help a woman who had got stuck.

Two signs have been erected either side of the ford to warn drivers - but Mr Gregory says people continue to “plough straight into it”.
