Apparently, there’s some sci-fi film or other opening next week that has a lot of people all in a lather, but for those of us that grew up on Roald Dahl, this teaser for Steven Spielberg’s take on The BFG, coming to cinemas in July, is something to get much more excited about.
Oh all right, Star Wars then. The Force Awakens is oh so close to hitting the big screen, but let’s step back to our first ever glimpse of Darth Vader. The deep, raspy voice and slightly bronchial breathing were menacing in the extreme. Is there a way to make him sound even scarier? Just dub over him with Donald Trump soundbites … obviously.
He’s been in the news a lot recently has old Donald, and as the online petition to bar him from entering the UK passes the 500,000 mark, it’s clear he’s not particularly popular with a lot of Brits. It would also appear he’s not everyone’s cup of tea in the States as this bald eagle demonstrates.
Gary Neville got off to a losing start as the new manager of Valencia on Wednesday, but to Manchester United fans and, now, Sky Sports viewers, he’ll always be a winner. Has there been a better football pundit to grace our screens? Not for me, Clive.
Right, let’s ramp up the cute-o-meter with two clips from the animal kingdom. The first is of a young panda making futile but awww-inducing bids for freedom. The second, and likely to feature in any list of cutest YouTube video of the year, is of an orangutan’s reaction to a magic trick. Apologies if this week’s chart arrives late, as we’ll be watching this one on loop for quite a while.
Back to the US, and the strange world of the political TV ad campaign. CNN has gone behind the scenes for the shoot of a Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz schmaltz-fest. Now this is hard to believe, I know, but it transpires things aren’t quite as off-the-cuff as you’d imagine. Politicians, eh? Who can we trust now?
Footballers and music video … a match made in heaven. From Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle’s Diamond Lights disgrace to Paul Gascoigne cashing in on his Italia 90 fame with this frankly awful version of Fog on the Tyne, they go together like expanded polystyrene and peanut butter. Continuing this ignoble tradition, QPR have weighed in with their players singing Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time. Worth watching just for the experience of seeing some of the world’s worst lip-synching.
Finally this week, Father Christmas (yes he DOES exist, OK?) can deliver presents around the world in one night, which is a neat trick, but in this video he shows off an unexpected skill; and if any Sunday footballers out there think they’ve played on some rotten pitches, spare a thought for these lads.
