Disturbing Footage Captures Moment Tesla Surges Into Bystanders
The viral video depicts a tense standoff between the driver and a group of individuals surrounding her vehicle. Carpenter gets inside her car while the pedestrians continue to surround it, and as she manoeuvres, some kick and hit the vehicle. After a few seconds, the Tesla allegedly lurches forward, forcing people to move out of the way as it allegedly ploughs into the crowd, leaving injured pedestrians on the road.
Social media reactions have ranged from widespread concern to scrutiny of the driver's demeanour. Commenters on X expressed disbelief at the lack of hesitation shown in the footage, with many calling for maximum legal penalties. A subsequent mugshot showing the suspect smiling drew significant comment online.
A number of users also defended Carpenter, arguing she acted out of fear. 'Looks to me like she has a pretty good defence. She was in her car being surrounded, people beginning to hit and kick her car,' one commenter wrote. Another added: 'I'm with you. She was probably terrified.' X user @TheDajaKing suggested Carpenter may have been 'afraid and feeling boxed in', but added that it did not justify the outcome. 'Babe it was a choice to jump the curb to try and hit people — she's going to JAIL,' she wrote.

Looks to me like she has a pretty good defense. She was in her car being surrounded , people beginning to hit and kick her car. Get out of the crowd however you can, to save your life. Too many women by themselves being killed right now.

She literally had to jump the curb to hit these people, she chose to ram FORWARD over a curb into a crowd instead of reversing & leaving. I can understand her being afraid and feeling boxed in, but babe it was a choice to jump the curb to try & hit people — she’s going to JAIL 😭

Midnight Collision Leaves Multiple Injured
The incident occurred late on a Saturday night when Lexington police say Carpenter drove into the crowd before continuing the wrong way down a one-way street. Four people were injured, though police did not disclose the nature of their injuries.
Officers who intercepted the vehicle noted signs of significant impairment. According to them, she 'created substantial danger of death and/or serious physical injury to others' and displayed 'extreme indifference to the value of human life.' They observed that she had 'bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, a variety of emotional effects,' and that 'the odour of an alcoholic beverage radiated from her person.'
Carpenter reportedly refused a breathalyser test and failed multiple sobriety tests when booked into the Fayette County Detention Center, according to reports.

Charges and Consequences
Carpenter faces several serious charges, including five counts of second-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, DUI, and reckless driving. She also faces a charge related to allegedly allowing a person under the age of 21 on premises where alcohol is sold, after investigators allegedly found her in possession of a fake identification card from Cincinnati, according to local reports.
At her initial court appearance on Monday, Carpenter pleaded not guilty to all charges. Prosecutors have accused her of intentionally driving through the crowd, a claim her defence is expected to challenge as the case moves forward. The judge ordered the immediate suspension of her driving licence pending resolution of the legal proceedings.
Carpenter remains under legal supervision as the community responds to the arrest and the ongoing investigation. Her next court appearance is scheduled for 14 April, where toxicology reports and witness statements are expected to be presented.
