Viral video giant Tiktok to create 100 new jobs with hub in Dublin

Viral-video giant Tiktok will create 100 news jobs with a hub in Dublin.

It will be one of three major centres for monitoring the safety of its 1 billion users worldwide, covering Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

A Tiktok company spokesperson said: "Building on recent local leadership appointments in markets including the UK, this dedicated regional hub will place an even greater focus on strengthening policies, technologies and moderation strategies and ensuring that they complement both local culture and context,"

Office head Cormac Keenan said in a public statement: "I'm excited to have the opportunity to lead this new hub and shape a more locally-relevant content policy approach that helps our community to continue to feel as comfortable as possible expressing themselves to the full."

The Chinese company has been a source of controversy since its launch in 2017.

The site has previously been fined over $5.7 million for illegal data collection from children in 2019 and has been criticised for banning users who expressed an “anti-China” sentiment.

An investigation remains underway in the UK as to how the app handles children’s personal data.

Tiktok remains the fastest-growing app in Ireland, with a survey estimating a third of Irish teens have the app on their phone.
