Viral Tokyo escalator video makes Glasgow nostalgic for the cinema

Glaswegians have been clinging to nostalgia more than ever during the strange times we are faced with due to lockdown and social distancing.

With phrases like 'Mind pubs?' and 'Mind gigs?' doing the rounds as we seek to soften the blow of not being able to head out and enjoy ourselves with typical Glasgow humour.

And now a seemingly innocuous video of someone heading down an escalator in Tokyo has somehow made everyone in the city 'choking' for a wee trip to the pictures.

And a big bag of popcorn and a big juice to go with it.

The reason? The video of the escalator at the Shibuya Sky observation deck, which overlooks Japan's most famous crossing, looks a teeny bit like the view from the glass escalator going up to the top floor at Cineworld on Renfrew Street.

A tweet of a video from the escalator, captioned with 'The view over Glasgow from Cineworld', went viral yesterday in the city, with over 9,000 views.

With Glaswegians responding with tweets such as "OMG I actually thought it was", "You had me for a second, or 4", "Screaming" and "Glasgow’s cineworld = scariest cinema ever".

It's safe to say that the glass elevator at Cineworld does offer some pretty decent views over the city as it whisks folk up to the top of the 170-foot-tall building.

Although it's not quite on the same level as the view over Tokyo!
