Viral TikTok video shows how to remove worms and bugs from strawberries

"I am never eating strawberries after this," is a popular comment (and rational response) to the latest TikTok trender.

A viral video shows live bugs wriggling out of store-bought strawberries, in a squeamish scene that is designed to inform as well as disgust.

The video's creator, @babyadrienne, reveals a tip that washing strawberries in salt and water forces any bugs to come out.

Since then, the video - which has collected over 700,000 likes - has sent horrified viewers hunting down their own uninvited creepy crawlers.

Cloud Mountain Farm Centre said the worms were most likely to be "larvae of Spotted Wing Drosophila", reported the Independent. The flies lay their eggs inside ripening fruit, strawberries only being one example.

Fortunately - for the strawberry industry and our tastebuds - these creatures are not harmful to ingest.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defends insects and larvae as "non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects" in fruit, along with rodent hairs and mould.
