Viral story about woman who spent £15,000 on Tinder date shown to be hoax

A viral tale about a woman who accidentally ordered £15,000 worth of wine while on a first date in London has turned out to be a hoax.

The dating horror story, which began circulating on Whatsapp and Twitter last week, alleged that a woman who met up with a Tinder match at The Shard in London accidentally ended up with a whopping five-figure bill for their drinks.

As the story goes, the unnamed woman thought she had ordered three £50 bottles of wine.

But when the bill arrived at the end of their evening, she was stunned to see she had misread the menu - and the bottles had a price tag of £5,000 each.

Not prepared to pay the cost, the woman then reportedly set up a 10-year direct debit payment to pay off her debt.

As it turns out, however, the story was not true -- or at least not entirely.

BBC Newsbeat confirmed the company which runs businesses at the Shard has fielded numerous calls about the rumour.

And after checking with all the vendors in the building, Real Estate Management UK (REM) said none of them were aware of such as incident.

Though the story may not be true, many social media users still took pleasure in the horror of the bad date.

One person tweeted: "I would die. Seriously I would keel over right there."

Another wrote: "Went out for a date and then dropped half a mortgage on drinks."

Others suspected the story may have been made up.

One person tweeted: "The Shard story doesn't make sense actually because if you're buying wine for £5k they're giving you a lengthy presentation of it, giving you a taster, and stressing why it's so expensive."
