Viral soap and pepper trick shows children the importance of washing hands to combat coronavirus

A viral soap and pepper trick has been used to demonstrate the importance of washing your hands amid the coronavirus epidemic.

The trick was first used by a teacher in America, who shared the video to her Instagram.

The clip shows what happens when soap is added to the bowl of water and pepper (Birmingham Live)

In the clip, which can be watched above, a bowl is filled with water and sprinkled with black pepper - which resembles the 'virus'.

A person then dips their finger into the bowl, and pepper granules stick to their finger.

This shows how easily the virus would be picked up without the use of soap.

The person then dips their finger into some soap, before placing the finger back into the bowl of pepper and water.

When this is done, the pepper spreads out to the other side of the dish, leaving the finger clear of any 'virus'.

According to Cool Science Experiments, the surface tension of the water keeps the pepper floating on top.

When you add some soap, the surface tension is disturbed and the water molecules move away from the soap, which also causes the pepper to move away.

You can try the experiment at home too, with just water, pepper, two dishes and some soap.

The latest advice from the NHS is to wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds to prevent spreading the virus.

People are also being urged to wash hands when you get home or into work, and to use hand sanitiser gel if soap is not available.
