Viral post gets people's hopes up that McDonald's restaurants are reopening

McDonald's fans were tricked into thinking its restaurants across the UK were reopening - but it turned out to be a cruel prank.

The fast food chain closed all of its restaurants on March 23 to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Yesterday (April 1), a post circulated on social media which raised the hopes of Maccies fans, announcing that all of its restaurants were set to reopen on Monday, April 6.

The person who created the online announcement made it look like it had come from the company, featuring its famous golden arches.

The fake post was shared widely on social media (Nottingham Live)

It read: "Mc Donald's have decided to re-open all UK branches from Monday 6th April."

The post went on to say that drive-thru and takeaway would be on offer and special measures would be in place to prevent contact and maintain social distancing, reported Nottingham Live.

The post went on to say: "Unfortunately our breakfast menu will not be offered but our menu will be available all day. We would like to thank our employees for agreeing to serve you again.

"Floor guides are still installed and we have a limit of two customers inside each restaurant.

"We will continue to monitor the situation but for now we look forward to welcoming you back! See you soon!"

The eagle-eyed spotted that the post refers to McDonald's as 'Mc Donald's'.

McDonald's tweeted to clear up the viral post, saying: "Lots of people getting in touch about a certain post circulating tonight. It’s fake, we are not reopening next week and any official announcements would come from this page and would spell the brand name correctly…"

Some people were not fond of the April Fool's Joke. The prank was still doing the rounds today (April 2), appearing on community Facebook pages.

"It's not funny and rather cruel getting our hopes up like that. I could kills for a burger and fries right now," said one disappointed Big Mac fan.
