Viral cop-abusing pair fined

A mother and son who were filmed verbally abusing police officers were each handed a suspended sentence of one month in jail Tuesday by a Bangkok district court.

On Monday, a video clip went viral showing the pair after they had been flagged down by police in Thung Maha Mek district. The handheld video was taken by one of the officers.

According to the police, 19-year-old Phayu Sae-Ngo was pulled over for driving a motorcycle without a crash helmet and controlling a vehicle that lacked a licence plate.

A furious Mr Phayu was filmed swearing and spitting at the officer who recorded the encounter.

His mother, Sarawan Wangtarn, a food vendor, asked the police: "What do you want from me? I just want to sell my food."

They were taken to the Criminal Court for sentencing. The son was also fined 9,200 baht and the mother 5,000 baht.

Mr Phayu was also charged with using profanity against the authorities and attempting to physically harm another person.

The video has recorded over 17 million views on Facebook.
