Viral clip shows genius DIY hack to make face covering with old sock during coronavirus outbreak

Face masks, like anti-bacterial hand gel and other bug-fighting essentials, have been in high demand since the early signs of the coronavirus outbreak.

And now, the Scottish Government have issued new advice when it comes to wearing face coverings in a major government policy u-turn.

Nicola Sturgeon has recommended that Scots wear cloth face coverings on public transport and in shops in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

While Scotland's First Minister stressed this was not mandatory, the country's national clinical director, Jason Leitch, insisted wearing face coverings may become mandatory in future.

With this in mind, you may be reaching for a scarf on the way out of the door - but have you considered an old sock?

A woman has shared a genius clip of how to make a DIY face covering, using materials from your drawers - and it will take just minutes to do.

As the clip above shows, all you have to do is grab an old sock and a pair of scissors - here's the simple steps:

  • The first step is to cut the sock in half - roughly below the heel.
  • On the opposite side of the sock from the heel, cut the sock in half again.
  • At this point, you will want to fold the sock in half horizontally.
  • Cut two small incisions on either side and round of the edges.
  • Fasten your new mask behind your ears.

According to the Centers for Disease for Control and Prevention recommend, everyone should wear a cloth face covering to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

So, if you've not been able to get hold of one, this is a quick fix solution but it should not replace other preventative practices - including washing your hands and socially distancing.
