Violinist Nicola Benedetti says 'everyone should have access to high quality music education'

Violinist Nicola Benedetti visited a south London school as part of a drive to encourage more youngsters to take up classical music.

The professional musician from Ayrshire, who earned a £1 million record deal at 17, visited Jubilee Primary School in Brixton, where she ran a workshop with 140 children aged between five and eight. Ms Benedetti said playing to the children was the “most incredible experience”.

She added: “I have always felt driven to share my experiences, knowledge and the incredible teaching I have been so fortunate to have had access to. I believe everyone should have access to high quality music education, and I am passionate about promoting that.”

She played for the children before teaching them about the different ways music can be performed. Benedetti visited the school in her role as ambassador for music education charity London Music Masters (LMM).

The charity, based in Kennington, sees teachers go into inner-city primary schools and teach the violin or cello. It has worked with more than 2,500 children and their families since it was founded in 2008.

LMM’s Rob Adediran said: “Seeing Nicola work with our own teachers is inspiring.”
