Violet-Grace petition hits 100,000 signatures on anniversary of tragic hit and run

A petition demanding a life sentence for those who cause death by dangerous driving has hit 100,000 on the anniversary of tragic Violet-Grace's death.

Four-year-old Violet-Grace and her nan Angela French were struck by a hit and run driver in St Helens, on March 24, 2017.

Cowardly driver Aidan McAteer fled the scene, along with passenger Dean Brennan - leaving both the youngster and her nan fighting for life.

Sadly little Violet-Grace died from her injuries, while her nan suffered life-changing injuries.

McAteer was  jailed for nine years and four months  while Dean Brennan, who aided him in fleeing the country, was handed a sentence of six years and eight months.

The pair will spend  half their sentence  in prison and the other half on licence.

After the revelation that the killers would spend less time in prison than the amount of time Violet was alive, her parents launched a petition.

The petition called Violet-Grace's Law , demands life sentences for death by dangerous driving.

And today, on the two year anniversary of their daughter's death, the petition has reached the 100,000 signatures it needed to allow it to be debated in parliament.

The petition , which has been signed by more than 109,000 people reads: "In October 2017, the Government promised life sentences for death by dangerous driving. It’s now 2019.

"Innocent people have been killed, but nothing has changed.

"The law is out of date.

"Anyone convicted of death by dangerous driving should receive life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 15 years.

"If more than one person is killed or injured, the sentences must run separately."

Violet's mum Becky Youens told the ECHO : "We don’t want anyone to feel the pain and injustice we have.

"We have a life sentence as does violet.

"As it stands they will be out in 2020 and 2021. It is the second anniversary of Violet’s death.

"They [McAteer and Brennan] are both evil.

"They stepped over Violet’s body in the road as if she was rubbish to make their escape and left Violet and my mum for dead.

"They are both evil, cold and calculating."
