Violent thug stabbed pal after 'joke gone wrong' at lockdown-breaking party

A thug stabbed one of his friends amid a drink and drug session during lockdown.

Marc Young was stabbed in the stomach and the back by Christopher McDowall after "a joke gone wrong" at a flat in Paisley.

The 31-year-old committed the offence during last year's first Covid-19 lockdown after he'd been spared jail over a previous violent incident, the Daily Record reports.

Months earlier, McDowall attacked a woman who'd been giving cigarettes to his mum, who suffers from lung disease COPD.

And sentencing over the attack on Young was adjourned so McDowall can say his final goodbye to his mum, who is in hospital battling the terminal illness.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Young was left with face injuries and needed stitches to seal his knife wounds.

The alarm was raised after the attack in the town was witnessed through the window by a 15-year-old girl and her mum from across the street.

Police Scotland found Young injured inside the property that had blood on its walls, carpets and furniture.

He refused to tell police that his friend carried out the attack and even claimed not to know McDowall.

But police found the knife and DNA tests revealed McDowall’s skin cells on the handle and blood from Young on the blade.

McDowall admitted his guilt over the attack in April 2020 yesterday, minutes before his trial was due to start.

Defence solicitor Amy Spencer said: "He accepts the injuries were excessive and completely uncalled for."

She added: "His mother is in hospital just now, suffering from COPD.

"He advises me she is not in a good way at all.

"I ask that the case be continued overnight so he can say goodbye to his mother, as it may be the last time he sees her."

As he continued McDowall’s bail and deferred sentence, Sheriff Brian Mohan said: "You've got a terrible record and this is a terrible incident.

"I'll give you the chance to deal with family matters."

The NHS describes COPD as "the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties" and say it is "a common condition that mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke".
