A convicted sex offender, who evaded capture for six weeks before being arrested in a remote hut in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains, has been extradited to Victoria.
Christopher William Empey allegedly fled Victoria six weeks ago after cutting off a GPS tracker from his ankle, and the alarm was raised after he failed to comply with his monitoring conditions.
He was spotted in Nowra on the NSW south coast in December, but it took a tip-off from the public before he was arrested in a bushwalking hut in the Snowy Mountains, near Thredbo yesterday.
The location, on the Cascade Hut Trail in Kosciuszko National Park, is more than 400 kilometres from where Empey was captured on surveillance footage in Nowra.
Empey previously spent 12 years in prison for a violent rape in July 2002, in which he stomped on the victim's head.
She was so badly injured she had to re-learn how to walk and write.
Empey faced the Cooma Local Court today wearing a heavy jacket and board shorts.
He was extradited to Victoria, to face charges of damaging the bracelet and failing to comply with orders.
