Violent home invasion a case of mistaken identity

A 21-year-old has been arrested after a unit was broken into and a man and woman held at gunpoint. (HANDOUT/New South Wales Police Force)

A man who allegedly assaulted and held a couple at gunpoint in a botched home invasion was part of an organised crime ring.

Police say the 21-year-old man and an associate forced entry into the Condell Park unit on April 21.

A resident of the home, a 60-year-old man, was allegedly assaulted while another man demanded information from him.

That man and a 57-year-old woman were then held in a room at gunpoint.

Detectives were later able to identify the 21-year-old man during an investigation into the supply of stolen vehicles used by organised crime networks.

They believe the duo were allegedly hired to carry out the attack but targeted the wrong location.

The 21-year-old from Auburn was charged on Thursday with an array of offences including aggravated robbery, weapons offences and participating in criminal activity.

He will face the court on Friday.
