Violent EK thug jailed for having a razor blade in town centre

A violent offender jailed for stabbing a man is back in prison after he was caught with a razor blade in East Kilbride town centre.

Colin Smith, who had been freed early, was found slumped on a seat after a drinking session with friends.

He then hurled abuse at police officers who had searched him and found the blade.

Smith, 46, care of HMP Edinburgh, was jailed for a year at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted illegal possession of a razor blade and threatening or abusive behaviour in Cornwall Way on October 10.

Smith was jailed for two years and three months at the same court in 2019 after stabbing a man with scissors in Maxwell Drive, East Kilbride.

Victim James Park suffered a 6cm deep wound to his stomach that required stitches.

Neil Thomson, prosecuting, told the court the latest incident happened around 5.45 on a Saturday evening.

He stated: “Concerns were reported to the police for the well being of an apparently drunk man in Cornwall Way.

“Officers went there and found the accused. He was searched and a small razor blade was found in his jacket pocket.

“Smith was arrested and became abusive, shouting ‘Youse are f...... clowns’ and ‘You’re nothing but a rodent’.

“He continued to shout offensive remarks while being conveyed to Cathcart police station.”

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said dad of five Smith had been “trying to turn his life around” after his release from prison.

He had been using the blade to cut boxes while working for an electrician.

Mr Bruce said: “It’s his position that he forgot it was in his jacket pocket.

“He finished work and went drinking with friends.

“He was doing nothing untoward when the police found him.

“He was waiting for a bus home and fell asleep, slumped across seats. He thought it was unfair when the officers arrested him.

“But the law says that forgetting you are in possession of something is no defence.”

Sheriff Linda Nicolson said Smith’s record was “poor” and another jail sentence was the only option.

She reduced this from 16 months to 12 months because of his guilty plea and backdated it to October 12 as he has been in custody since then.
