Violent drunk Cameron Cawley stamped on girlfriend's head as she cowered in a bush

A violent drunk who kicked and stamped on his frightened girlfriend’s head and face as she hid from him under some bushes has been jailed.

Cameron Cawley, from Leeds, and his partner had both been drinking on June 6, 2021, when they got on a bus and became embroiled in an argument.

The 25-year-old spat at her and she fled the bus in the middle of nowhere near East Keswick.

Leeds Crown Court heard his girlfriend ran off and hid under some bushes, but Cawley found her within three or four minutes before unleashing a vicious attack by kicking and stamping on her.

She repeatedly begged him to stop and it was only when members of the public came to her rescue that Cawley stopped his brutal assault.

She suffered bruising, cuts and swelling and the Recorder Anesh Pema said it was thanks to their intervention that Cawley’s partner had not suffered any more serious injuries.

Cawley, of Sandhurst Terrace, Harehills, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but admitted a further charge of assault on an emergency worker after he spat on a police officer on May 25.

He had been reported to have been causing a nuisance at Leeds Bus Station and was arrested by two officers.

While in custody, he spat at one of the officers and threatened to stab them with a samurai sword and a screwdriver.

The court heard Cawley had lost his job at the beginning of the pandemic and moved in with his partner.

The pair drank heavily and he is said to have acknowledged that he is violent when he has been drinking.

Recorder Pema branded his assault on his partner a “disgraceful attack” and sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
