'Violent brute who battered me out on day release after just five years'

A mum who was attacked for hours by her ex is horrified at his move to an open prison with a day release scheme.

Jason Smith, 36, is five years into a 10-year sentence for battering Zoe Dronfield.

The judge added an extended licence of four years and called Smith a danger to the public.

Mum-of-two Zoe, 43, said: “Now I could see him on the street on day release.

"If anything were to happen when he comes out the people who made this decision will have blood on their hands.”

Smith was convicted in 2014 of GBH with intent after using a meat cleaver and a knife in the eight-hour attack.

It is understood Smith has not yet been granted day release.

The Prison Service said open prison and day release are key parts of rehabilitation to stop people reoffending.

It added: “All such offenders are carefully risk-assessed.”
