Violence leaves 3 dead, 5 injured across city

Sept. 01--Three men were killed and another five wounded in attacks between midmorning Monday and early Tuesday across the city, according to police.

The most recent homicide happened in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side. A 25-year-old who was standing on a front porch about 9:35 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of North Lawler Avenue was shot by someone who approached before shooting. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead there at 10:21 p.m., officials said.

He was identified as Kevin Nichols, of the block in which he was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

About an hour earlier, a 35-year-old man was shot to death in the 4900 block of South Drexel Boulevard in the Kenwood neighborhood on the South Side. (An earlier version of this story had a different age for the man). It's not clear how he came to be shot. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead there at 9:04 p.m., officials said. The shooting happened less than half a mile from President Barack Obama's home.

The man was identified as Tyris R. Jackson, of the block in which he was killed, according to the medical examiner.

About 11 a.m. Monday, police found a 51-year-old man dead in a basement in the 3900 block of North Spaulding Avenue in the Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. (An earlier version of this story had a different age for the man). He had suffered blunt force trauma, police said, and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:15 p.m., officials said. Detectives opened a homicide investigation.

The man was identified as Lloyd A. White, of the 3000 block of North Spaulding, according to the medical examiner.

In other shootings:

--Someone shot two 23-year-old men about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood on the Near West Side. The men were in an SUV, stopped at a light in the 2300 block of South Damen Avenue, when someone pulled alongside and started shooting, hitting both of them. One was grazed in the back and neck, but the other suffered multiple gunshot wounds and might be paralyzed, police said. One of the two men shot drove them to Stroger Hospital.

--A 26-year-old man was shot just before 10:40 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of North Kedzie Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the city's West Side. The man was shot in the right wrist and thigh and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said. Police described him as "very uncooperative."

--A 20-year-old man was shot at 7 p.m. Monday on the 11800 block of South State Street in the West Pullman neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The man was shot in the stomach and arm and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

--At 6 p.m. Monday, an 18-year-old man was shot on the 1000 block of North Avers Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, police said. The man was shot in the leg and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said. The man was on the street when someone approached and began firing, police said.
