Vintage Trouble: 1 Hopeful Rd review – energetic but deeply trad soul-rock

Vintage Trouble band
Stomping and swaggering … Vintage Trouble

AC/DC like Vintage Trouble so much that they invited them on their current world tour. The Los Angeles quartet have also supported the Who, and it’s easy to hear the attraction to any passing veteran rockers. Playing what they describe as “live-wired, straight-shootin’, dirty-mouth’d, pelvis-pushing juke music”, the group storm through old school, Led Zeppelin-style rock fronted by Ty Taylor – a vintage-suited, latterday Otis Redding/James Brown-type soul man.

This intriguing combination is effectively showcased in stomping opener Run Like the River, which matches swaggering slide guitars to sun-drenched gospel vocals. Elsewhere, Taylor nestles into more familiar, comfortable shoes in a clutch of slower, Al Greenesque soul numbers. New ground is not being broken, but their passion and energy banishes any risk of Vintage Trouble sounding like a bar band. The group are perhaps a little more trad than even the likes of Alabama Shakes and Blackberry Smoke, but fans of both will find much to enjoy here.
