Vintage motorbikes worth thousands saved during mystery garage fire

Lots of vintage motorbikes worth tens of thousands of pounds have been saved this morning after a large fire at a well-known garage.

The blaze broke out shortly before 8.30pm on Thursday evening at Marriott Motorcycles in Birkenhead,"one of the UK's leading dealerships for Suzuki, Kawasaki, Mutt, Motorini and Zontes bikes."

Firefighters rushed to the address on Oxton Road and worked through the night to battle the flames, managing to contain the inferno to the workshop area.

That meant many of the vintage bikes inside were recovered unscathed.

This morning, fire bosses were unable to confirm if the fire was started deliberately, but a spokeswoman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue refused to rule out arson.

An update on the investigation, and the possible cause, is expected later.

A spokesman for Marriott Motorcycles said they didn't wish to comment.

Firefighters wearing breathing appartaus had to break into the building using an angle grinder last night to get to the blaze.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene along with a platform ladder to help crews tackle it from above.

Photographs taken at the scene show a large emergency service response on Oxton Road where a number of officers could be seen studying plans of the building.

This morning, incident commander Tony Brown said: "Our firefighters worked tirelessly & were able to contain the fire mostly to the workshop area of the business, meaning that the large majority of the new and vintage motorcycles inside have remained unscathed."
