A man who made off with a vintage Ferrari worth millions during a test drive in Germany is being hunted by police.

Police in Düsseldorf launched a search for a rare 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO, believed to be worth than more than €2 million, after it was stolen during a test drive on Monday.

The car, once owned by racing driver Eddie Irvine, was found hidden in a garage on Tuesday night in Grevenbroich.

However, the suspect remains at large and police have released a picture of a man inspecting the Ferrari before the theft.

Appealing for information, police said a man answering an advertisement for the sports car, which had 43,000 miles on the clock, turned up for the test drive on Monday.

He and the seller went on a drive, during which the seller got out of the car to swap places with the would-be buyer, who then accelerated and drove away.

Bernhard Kerklo, managing director of the dealership, told Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung the man had called and emailed staff over the course of a number of weeks.

Mr Kerklo told German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt: "You can not bring the car into the market. The car is too flashy."

The "historic vehicle" once belonged to former Northern Ireland Formula 1 driver Irvine, according to a listing for the car on the dealer's website.

Irvine raced for Ferrari between 1996 and 1999 and was a teammate of F1's Michael Schumacher.

Only 272 of the Ferrari 288 GTO were ever built.
