Vintage Edinburgh buses will be appearing on city streets this weekend

Edinburgh locals are being encouraged to keep their eyes peeled this weekend as a special vintage buses cavalcade hits the streets.

Due to the coronavirus restrictions in 2020, it’s been almost two years since Lothian Buses marked their centenary with the capital’s last vintage bus parade, and how we’ve missed seeing the historic fleet.

Now, ahead of this year's Doors Open Day, that’s all set to change on Saturday, September 11, as locals are treated to a five-hour cavalcade run by bus preservation body Gifford Transport Group.

Kicking off at 10am, the cavalcade will feature the classic single-decker and double-decker fleets of yesteryear, and take in much of the city centre on a looped route between Comely Bank and the Meadows at Melville Drive.

Organisers say buses will display the defunct 17 service number to avoid confusion for Lothian Buses' service 47 customers.

While there will be plenty of old buses taking to Edinburgh’s roads, one thing the organisers can’t promise is that we’ll have favourable weather conditions.

Cloud cover dominates Saturday’s forecast in the capital, and there is a very real possibility of rain in the afternoon - so remember to bring a brolly.
