Vinicius Souza in Celtic transfer twist as reports in the Netherlands offer fresh deal hope

Celtic have been offered fresh hope of signing Vinicius Souza with the Brazilian reportedly yet to make a final decision on whether to join PSV.

The Lommell star has been in high demand this summer with a host of clubs across Europe keen to land him. Real Betis, Schalke, Ajax, Fenerbahce and Celtic were all in the mix. But PSV Eindhoven emerged as the favourites to land the 23-year-old. The Eredivisie outfit were claimed to be Souza’s preferred destination this summer and were close to finalising a transfer despite widespread competition.

And while that may well still be the case, reports in the Netherlands say that players’ agents have denied that a deal has been done to join Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side, and that a decision will be made next week. Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink tweeted: “Informed about the story about Vinicius Souza and PSV. When asked, agents of the Brazilian both deny (in Spanish and English) a Scottish story that he will play football at PSV. The decision about his future is near and probably already this week.”

The latest development could reignite the Hoops desire to get a deal done. Souza is 60 per cent owned by the City Football Group, who enjoy a close relationship with the Scottish Premiership champions. Ange Postecoglou was hired from City ‘family’ club Yokohama F Marinos.

New head of recruitment Mark Lawwell - son for former CEO Peter - left the Abu Dhabi based organisation to take a post in Glasgow this summer. That could help sway any decision in Celtic’s favour if Souza is indeed yet to make a final call. But the Scottish league season starts in just over three weeks and Postecoglou won;t want to hang around waiting on a answer if he has alternative options to pursue
