Vinesh Phogat, Reetika, Anshu Malik secure Paris Olympics quotas for India

NEW DELHI: Making a triumphant return to the international arena after leading a prolonged protest against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, celebrated Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat secured a Paris Olympics quota in the women's 50kg category at the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Saturday.

Joining her in booking their tickets to Paris were Anshu Malik (57kg) and U23 world champion Reetika (76kg), who both reached the tournament final with impressive performances.

With these additions, India now boasts four quota places for the Paris Games, alongside Antim Panghal's achievement in the 53kg category at last year's World Championships.

However, the selection of wrestlers to represent India in the Olympics remains uncertain, with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) potentially considering final selection trials.

Despite facing challenges such as months of disrupted training due to the protests and legal battles, Vinesh showcased her resilience and skill, securing victory after victory.

Displaying her trademark strategy, Vinesh capitalized on opportunities to dominate her opponents, including a swift victory over Miran Cheon in just one minute and 39 seconds in the opening bout.

Anshu Malik, a silver medalist at the 2021 World Championships, continued her impressive form with dominant performances throughout the tournament. Similarly, Reetika demonstrated her class with technical superiority wins, advancing to the final group bout against China's Juang Wang.

However, Mansi Ahlawat's journey was halted in the semifinals by North Korea's Hyon Gyong Mun, who proved formidable in defence. Unfortunately, Nisha Dahiya was unable to reach the semifinals in the 68kg category, ending India's hopes for further advancement in that weight class.
