Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany has announced his retirement from football, taking over as Anderlecht head coach on a full-time basis.

The Belgian defender, who won four Premier League titles as well as six domestic trophies during his 11-year career with City, left the club last year and spent a season as player/manager with Anderlecht.

Kompany, 34, was the final Manchester City signing before the club was taken over by billionaire Sheikh Mansour.

The defender, who also amassed 89 caps for Belgium - first captaining his country in 2010 - made 360 appearances for City, scoring 20 goals, his most famous arguably being a late thunderbolt against Leicester to all but seal the title in his final season at the club.

"I want to fully commit to my role as a coach and need 100 per cent of my time and focus for it," Kompany told the Anderlecht club website.

"That's why I'm quitting as a football player."
