Vincent Kompany names his all-time Man City XI - and there's no room for Joleon Lescott or Fernandinho

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says John Stones is the best defender at the club, as he named the England international in his all-time City XI.

Kompany - whose long range strike against Leicester saw City move to within one win of the Premier League title - was choosing the best players he has lined up alongside at City during his 11-year spell.

And it was Stones who got the honour of lining up next to the influential Belgian in the heart of defence.

He explained: "There isn't much. [Aymeric] Laporte is great, [Nicolas] Otamendi's great. [Joleon] Lescott obviously is a legend. But I'm going for Stonesey because he's probably the most gifted defender.

"Maybe not just defender but package. He can play. He's improved a lot with his tackles and strength."

Alongside the pair in Kompany's back five was Joe Hart, Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta.

Kompany said: "Ederson is well on the way to becoming City's greatest ever goalkeeper, but Joe was defining in changing the culture at this club. He's a lot more than a great goalkeeper, he was a leader for the club and in his best years he was unbelievable for us.

"The amount of years [Clichy] played in the Premier League before even City, I was always impressed with him. Then when he played with us, there wasn't much between him and Kolarov, so it's a difficult choice. But I'm going for Gael because he was rash. He was such an annoying player to play against. He did a great job for us."

"I give it [right-back] to Zaba because in his best days I remember him having such a big impact on big games and I recognise that."

In midfield, Kompany initially chose Fernandinho, but replaced him with Kevin De Bruyne to play alongside Yaya Toure and David Silva.

"I could have put Nigel de Jong, Gaz [Gareth] Barry. I could have put so many more in this squad. In any team Dinho [Fernandinho] should play, but I'm going to make it ridiculously offensive and put Kevin De Bruyne in," he explained.

"I've seen Kevin do stuff I've never seen anyone do. Never mind my City XI, he might be in my world XI.

"Yaya everybody knows his quality. In his best days what a pleasure to have these players. David, the wizard. If you don't put him in your team you don't have a right to build a team."

Up front, Kompany named a forward line of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Carlos Tevez.

"Even if he never kicks a ball anymore, just for that one moment against QPR. It's just got to be Kun [Aguero]," Kompany said.

"I'll go with Tevez. He had such an impact in days where we don't score as many goals as we do now. We didn't concede a lot as well but we needed to score one to win the game and it was always Tevez in terms of impact in the squad in big games."

Kompany's Man City XI: Hart; Clighy, Kompany, Stones, Zabaleta; Toure, Silva, De Bruyne; Sterling, Tevez, Aguero.
