Vincent Kompany makes Pep Guardiola contract demand to Manchester City

Vincent Kompany has urged Manchester City to tie Pep Guardiola down to a new long-term contract.

Guardiola's contract expires at the end of next season, with the Spaniard yet to agree an extension, despite his record-breaking exploits in charge of City.

But Former City skipper Kompany, who left last summer after a glittering 11-year spell, has told his former club to sort out Guardiola's future.

"If I was in a deciding position at City now, then I would do everything I can to keep Pep for as long as I can,” said Kompany.

“He is truly the best. To say anyone will ever come near, it is speculating in a ludicrous way.”

Kompany left City to return to Anderlecht, where his career began, as player-coach, with the club currently 10th in the Belgian Pro League.

Asked if it was his dream to manage City in the future, Kompany told Sky Sports: “I'm not thinking about that.

"My ambition is right now to be successful with a project at Anderlecht and deliver that successfully.

"After that, everything else we will see. I spend 99 per cent of my day just making sure what I do now is successful.

"I learn from the mistakes of others and the things they do well. Then I come back and I feel I am ready, despite not being ready.”

Guardiola addressed his future and said: "We’ve been here four seasons and then it will be five, because I’m trying to stay here next season, too.

"I’m incredibly good here. To sign a contract you have to see how it works and if I deserve it.

"We’ve increased our levels a lot and the expectations are higher. We’ll see if we can handle it. It’s not just my desire.

"Now we have a little break with the family over Christmas and we have time to think about the future."
