Vincent Kompany goal: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola refuses to commit on captain's future

Pep Guardiola is still unsure whether Vincent Kompany will stay at Manchester City despite the wonder-goal which may prove crucial in retaining the Premier League title.

Kompany’s incredible 25-yard strike proved to be the difference against Leciester City, in a game City had to win to keep their destiny in their own hands.

The 33-year-old centre-half faces an uncertain future at the Etihad, with his contract set to expire this summer, and scored on what may be his final home appearance.

Guardiola has previously seemed open to a one-year renewal for Kompany but was non-committal when the subject of his future was raised on Monday night.

“We spoke with him and his agent,” Guardiola said. “At the end of the season we are going to talk to him clearly.

“He is an incredible human being and he has helped me a lot. Always I was said I could not use him too much but we have always known we could count on him for his personality.

“This club is what it is because of people like Vincent. At the end of the season, after the FA Cup we will decide the best for both parties.”

Kompany has been a City player since 2008 and pre-dates the Abu Dhabi-led takeover which has transformed the club in the years since.

His potential title-winning goal on Monday night will only cement his legendary status at City but Guardiola would not promise more than talks at the end of the campaign.

"[We must] finish the season and after we are going to talk,” the City manager said. “We spoke with him three weeks ago, one month ago. We spoke fluently two or three times.

“We are going to take a beer together and decide what is best - especially for him and for the club.”
