Vincent Browne apologises for tweet about Health Minister Stephen Donnelly

Former broadcaster Vincent Browne has apologised over remarks made on his Twitter account about Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.

The veteran journalist last week hit out at Donnelly in a now deleted tweet which poked fun at the Minister and his wife.

The tweet posted from Vincent Browne's account read: "Before marrying him, Stephen Donnelly's wife-to-be put her complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica on sale, saying she didn't need them any longer as her husband-to-be ."

The tweet was subject to much criticism from other social media users including Newstalk broadcaster Kieran Cuddihy who wrote: "What a s****y thing to say"

The former TV3 broadcaster has since deleted the tweet and issued an apology via Twitter.

An updated from Browne's account on Monday night read: "It was thoughtless of me to make reference to Stephen Donnelly’s wife, even in a tweet that was intended to be a joke.

"I apologise to her and to him. I have deleted the tweet."

Browne presented Tonight with Vincent Browne on TV3 which was broadcast from Monday to Thursday at 11:00pm for 10 years.

He stepped away from the show in 2017 after presenting it for some 10 years.

Browne was best known for his combative interview style with Irish politicians including an often shared interview with Donnelly from some years back which often resurfaces on social media.
