Feb. 04--A documentary on the '85 Bears will shed more light on Mike Ditka's controversial decision that bypassed Walter Payton and let William Perry score a touchdown in Super Bowl XX, Vince Vaughn told ESPN's Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic.
Vaughn, the executive producer and narrator of "30 for 30: The '85 Bears," which premieres tonight at 8 p.m., raised the subject while discussing his admiration of Payton while growing up in Buffalo Grove.
"To have that be the prominent sports figure (in Chicago at the time) was a gift because he was just so elegant. Payton, not only was he a phenomenal player but ... he just had so much class the way he carried himself and just was an incredible icon," vaughn said on the "Mike and Mike" radio show.
"I think it still rubs people the wrong way that (William) Perry got the touchdown," Golic added. Greenberg chimed in: "Ditka regrets it to this day. Ditka will tell you that to this day."
"They talk about that in the doc," Vaughn said, "and there's some new information about that, which is interesting. ... I don't want to give anything away but there's some new information discussing what that is."
Vaughn said the sports world's continued fascination with the '85 Bears stems from the team's postseason dominance as well as its cast of "characters."
"It's the combination of those personalities," Vaughn said. "You had guys like Payton, which we talked about, who was such a gentleman, and Jimmy Mac (Jim McMahon), who was fun, and the Fridge, who seemed like a big lovable kid, and (Steve) Mongo McMichael, he's an interesting character as well."
