Vinai Venkatesham issues transfer statement as Arsenal handed Gabriel Magalhaes boost

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Monday, August 17.

Vinai Venkatesham makes statement

Arsenal managing director Vinai Venkatesham insists the club have the right setup to succeed with Mikel Arteta and Edu set to lead the Gunners forward.

Venkatesham has been tasked with leading Arsenal on his own after the departure of head of football Raul Sanllehi yesterday, bringing to an end the joint-management of the club that they had shared since September 2018.

The 39-year-old Venkatesham has been at Arsenal for a decade, working his way through the club's commercial departments to his current role.

Premier League opening day fixtures 'leaked'

Club sources insisted that in light of the coronavirus pandemic and its devastating impact on finances meant that owner Stan Kroenke felt the time was right for a sole figurehead to be in place at the Emirates Stadium.

Venkatesham's influence on footballing matters will inevitably increase in the new structure but he views it as more of an oversight role with responsibility for Arsenal's footballing destiny lying with Arteta and Edu.

Gabriel Magalhaes latest

The summer transfer is almost three weeks old now and Arsenal are starting to pick up the pace as far as their summer recruitment drive is concerned.

The Gunners sealed their first signing of the summer earlier this week, landing former Chelsea winger Willian on a free-transfer, and they have now their sights set on bolstering other areas of the squad.

Amongst the areas most in need of bolstering is centre-back, despite head coach Arteta now having William Saliba to call upon following the end of his loan spell at St Etienne.

And one man who is being heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium is Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

Fixture leak

Arsenal could face a huge opening day clash for the second time in three seasons.

The Gunners took on Manchester City on the opening day in 2018/19, with a trip to Newcastle last season. And they could now be set for another defining clash in 2020/21 - Manchester United.

The new Premier League season is almost upon us.

The interrupted 2019/20 campaign has not long finished, with the coronavirus disrupting the season and that has not left long between seasons, with 2020/21 due to begin on September 12 - just four weeks away.

And that means a quick turnaround for the Premier League in terms of preparations for the new season.

Ahead of any campaign there is always much excitement and much of that ramps up when the full list of fixtures are released.
