Villarreal get fixture boost before Manchester United Europa League final

Villarreal's final La Liga game of the season has been brought forward by 24 hours, giving them extra rest before their Europa League showdown with Manchester United.

United will meet Unai Emery's side in Gdansk on May 26th for the final of the European competition, after getting past Real Sociedad, AC Milan, Granada and Roma in the knockout stages.

Villarreal, who are seventh in the Spanish league but could finish a possible fifth if results go their way, stunned Arsenal to deny an all-English Europa League final. Emery is looking for his fourth success in the competition, after winning three successive Europa Leagues with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016.

La Liga has announced their final round of fixtures have now been moved to Saturday evening, May 22nd, when Villarreal travel to Real Madrid. President Fernando Roig formally asked for the change, it is understood.

It means the Spanish outfit will have an extra 24 hours' rest compared to United, who finish their Premier League campaign on Sunday May 23rd with a 4pm kick off at Wolves.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been an outspoken critic of United's Premier League schedule this season, particularly when the home game against Liverpool was rearranged to give his side three games in five days.

"It's unheard of," Solskjaer said on the schedule.

"It's made by people who've never played football at this level. Physically, impossible for the players to do it after being here, doing Sunday-Tuesday, Thursday, it's impossible.

"So we've not been dealt a good hand but we'll have to play as well as we can."

United lost against Leicester and Liverpool, after beating Aston Villa in the first of those three games. They are looking to wrap up a second place finish in the league.
