Villarreal have confirmed that an official request from themselves, Atletico Madrid and La Liga to move their league fixture to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami has been made to the Spanish Football Association.
The two clubs are due to face each other at Villarreal's El Madrigal Stadium on the weekend of December 8, but they have requested the fixture be moved to the US "as part of La Liga's international growth strategy".
"There are millions of La Liga fans around the world," said Villarreal in a statement .
"Bringing the clubs closer to these fans represents an important opportunity to connect with them and continue working for the global growth of La Liga on a worldwide level.
"This international growth has a benefit for the clubs involved, as well as players, fans, La Liga, Spanish football and Spain itself."
The club also quote Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil, who adds: "Atletico Madrid work each season to expand our brand in every continent and playing this tie in the US would let us continue to work on that.
"Furthermore, we would be able to bring Spanish football closer to the fans and followers who live outside of our country. It would be a great game which would show the way to go in the future."
Villarreal say that they will offer the choice of three compensation packages to season ticket holders over the loss of one home league game.
The first package is a choice of a discount of 40 per cent on next season's season ticket, or 20 per cent off this season's.
The second is a free ticket and travel to the reverse fixture at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, and the third is travel to Miami for the game, although places are limited.
