Villagers pull down Assam madrassa linked to al-Qaida, police call it resentment against jehadi activities

GUWAHATI: Not the government, but this time villagers from the minority community in Assam’s Goalpara district have demolished a madrassa which has been linked to al-Qaida by police.

The state government last month had bulldozed three madrassas in Barpeta, Morigaon and Bongaigaon districts all of which have been found to have links with the terror outfit.

Goalpara district superintendent of police VV Rakesh Reddy said, "We were not aware of this demolition because the district administration was not involved in it. But, there was a strong resentment that we were aware of last few days. Because when we interrogated few locals after we arrested one person from the village in connection with jehadi activities, and that is when the people came to know that one jehadi was arrested in the madrassa."

The locals of Darogar Alga, Pakhiura Char, Goalpara pulled down demolished the madrassa and a residence adjacent to madrassa which was previously used by two suspected Bangladeshi nationals.

The police CPRO said that the two Bangladeshi nationals who had stayed at the madrassa, Aminul Islam@Usman@Mehdy Hasan and Jahangir Alom are absconding and are members of AQIS. They were working in the guise of teachers of this Darogar Alga Pakhiura Char Madrassa at different times during 2020-22.
