Village school north of Cardiff to expand by 50 per cent catering for new housing developments

A village school north of Cardiff could expand by 50 per cent to cater for huge new housing developments.

Pentyrch Primary School could expand from 140 places to 210 places, and also get 48 part-time nursery places.

Thousands of new houses are planned for northwest Cardiff, with demand for school places expected to shoot up. You can read more about the major housing developments being built in Cardiff here.

Cardiff Council will consult the public on expanding the primary school in Pentyrch to help cater for this increasing demand.

Councillor Sarah Merry, cabinet member for education, said: “If a public consultation is agreed and plans progress, expanding Pentyrch Primary School would provide a range of benefits and exciting opportunities for both the school and its community.”

The council’s cabinet agreed on Thursday, July 15, to launch the public consultation.

As part of the expansion, the school would get “enhanced buildings and improved learning environments”. The nursery could also prevent the need for parents in Pentyrch to take their children out of the area.

Cllr Merry added: “Continuous improvements and the successful collaboration with Llanishen Fach Primary School have paved a strong pathway for the future of the school.

“This strategic expansion would allow greater opportunities for staff and pupils, while giving more children the chance to benefit from the education on offer at the site.

“The new housing developments in northwest Cardiff will generate significant increase in the demand for school places in the area.

“By expanding Pentyrch Primary School, we could ensure we meet that demand as well as providing pupils and staff with access to an excellent, modern learning environment.”
