Village road to remain closed for 11 days after wall collapsed in Bramcote

A busy route in Bramcote will remain closed until the end of next week after a small landslide caused a wall to collapse.

Bricks, mud and debris tumbled into the middle of the road where Town Street meets Chilwell Lane - a corner known locally as 'Devil's Bend'.

The incident happened at around 1.30pm on Sunday, February 7.

As a result, the typically busy road was closed by Nottinghamshire Police with a blockade established and a sign informing motorists to seek an alternative route.

It reads: 'Emergency road closure. Please find alternative route.'

An emergency roadworks bulletin has now been issued from Via East Midlands on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council.

It states the closure of Town Street between its junction with Cow Lane and Common Lane will remain in place until Friday, February 19.

This means there is no access for motorists along this route, which is also used by bus services.

A large diversion has been established which is as follows:

Via A52, Bramcote – B6003 Stapleford Lane, Toton/Stapleford – B6003 High Road, Toton – A6005 Nottingham Road, Toton/Attenborough – Attenborough Lane, Chilwell – High Road, Chilwell – School Lane – Bramcote Lane, Chilwell – Chilwell Lane, Bramcote and Vice Versa.

Speaking of the incident on Sunday, Sergeant Iain Blackstock said: "It appears the wall has completely given way on to the highway probably as a result of all the adverse weather we have had lately - extreme rainfall followed by freezing temperatures.

"No one was injured and there haven't been any further incidents as a result but it's good that we were quickly informed and able to put safety measures in place.

"Officials from the local council have attended the scene and are arranging for a structural engineer to assess the damage in order to get it fixed.

"The road's likely to remain closed for the rest of the day at least so motorists will need to avoid the area. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

The same bit of road was closed for a number of weeks back in 2019 while work to reinforce the concrete walls and improve the safety of the road was conducted.
