A number of cows have been put down after they were injured when a lorry crashed into a car and house.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service were called to a report of a road traffic collision involving a lorry and a car in Main Road, Upper Broughton, at around 4.30am on September 16.

The lorry, which is believed to have been carrying 39 cattle, toppled before crashing into a house at the border of Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

The livestock were removed from the overturned lorry after the collision and transported away from the scene, according to Leicester Fire and Rescue Service.

A fire service spokesperson said that a number of animals had to be put down after being injured in the crash. The number of cows that have died as a result of the collision is not yet known.

The driver of the lorry suffered minor injuries.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newark fire station also attended the incident.

The recovery of the vehicles involved is still ongoing and a building inspector has been requested to assess whether there was any structural damage to the building which was crashed into.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service have said that the vehicles involved have been made safe and that arrangement has been made for the recovery of the lorry.

Main Road in Upper Broughton had been closed for most of the day but is now open.
