Village pub's beer garden application knocked back by Renfrewshire Council

A village pub’s bid to introduce a beer garden has been refused permission by Renfrewshire Council.

The Howwood Inn, formerly the Railway Inn, wanted to create an outdoor terrace at the side of its venue in George Street.

The application was first heard at the planning board at the end of August, but a decision was put on hold for a site visit.

It was revisited at this month’s meeting and local councillors Chris Gilmour and Andy Doig moved to reject the plans.

They expressed concern about the impact it would have on road safety in the area with the intersection of George Street and Main Street – just outside the pub – said to be a busy spot for traffic.

At the board, nine elected members voted against the application, with just five voting in favour.

An official notice of refusal was issued last week which said: “The proposed development is considered contrary to policy P1 of the Renfrewshire local development plan 2021 on the basis that it would detrimental to road safety in the local area.”

However, the applicant can still appeal the decision to Scottish ministers if it wishes to do so.

This must be lodged within three months of the date of the notice.
