Villa fans shared taxi with men who were 'credit to Liverpool'

Aston Villa fans have called two men a "credit to Liverpool" after they shared a taxi together to Anfield.

Sam Cooper and her partner Dave were visiting Liverpool to watch Aston Villa's game with the Reds on December 11 when they experienced some true Scouse hospitality.

Ms Cooper said the men were "lovely" and "really helped us out" when they didn't know how to get to Anfield.

After having lunch in the city centre the Villa fans from Kings Heath in Birmingham asked two men at the table next to them how to get to Anfield via bus.

But instead of just giving them directions, the two Reds' fans who were on their own way to Anfield invited Sam and Dave to share their taxi.

Ms Cooper, 45, told the ECHO : "They asked if we were going to the football and we said yeah. One man said that's where we're going, you can share a taxi and we can go halves.

"They asked if we were Villa fans and we had a laugh about how he reminded me of an old friend and then the taxi driver said he looked like John Bishop with his mask on.

"They were also giving me banter saying I sounded like Jack Grealish's missus because of my Birmingham accent."

Ms Cooper said when the taxi got outside Anfield, the two men told the pair the taxi was on them and to enjoy the game.

Ms Cooper didn't get the men's names, but did learn one of them came from Birkenhead.

She wrote in the Facebook group Birkenhead Gossip in the hope she might get to say thank you again to the men.

Ms Cooper added: "When we got outside Anfield and we asked them how much we owed towards the taxi, they both said no worries, it's all been paid for, have it on us.

"They were so lovely and really helped us out and are a credit to Liverpool. I just want to say thank you again as it really did mean a lot."

It was Ms Cooper's first time at Anfield and she called the stadium and the whole experience "amazing."

She said: "The stadium was amazing — it was huge and they're extending it too. It was heartbreaking at the [Hillsborough] memorial that the youngest was only 10-years-old. It was very emotional to see.

"The game was great. We knew Liverpool were going to thrash us, but we really did play well. Shame about the penalty, but that's life.

"The staff in the ground were lovely too having some banter with us."

In her post in Birkenhead Gossip, Ms Cooper later wished the two men "all the best for 2022," before adding: "Hope to meet you again."

In response, Janet Duckers said: "Well done to them, we have some lovely people in Birkenhead and Liverpool."

Kayleigh Dillon added: "We're not bad at all us Merseysiders."
