Vile tweets sent by racist troll after Everton v Tottenham match being investigated by police

A number of racist tweets posted after Everton played Tottenham are now being investigated by police.

was targeted online after Blues star Andre Gomes was left with a dislocated ankle connected to a tackle from the Spurs forward.

Gomes was taken off the pitch on a stretcher, at Goodison on Sunday night and Son, who had initially been given a yellow card for the incident, was sent of with a red card and appeared distraught at his opponents injury.

In response to the incident, a number of posts from one Twitter account were flagged to the ECHO for their used to describe the South Korean player.

The tweets are now being investigated by Merseyside Police as an alleged hate crime .

The ECHO have chosen to blur the account details to allow police to carry out their investigation.

Some of the content of the posts has also been redacted to avoid causing further offense.

In a tweet sent shortly before 7pm on Sunday, the account user posted: "Son is to blame for the leg break. End of.

"If he hadn't of tried to foul Gomez that leg break wouldn't have happened.

"The ***** ****** **** ****."

A second tweet was also posted in response to this and the entirety had to be blurred.

The account and tweets have now been taken down off the site but it is not clear if they were removed by Twitter or the original poster.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm we are investigating an offensive tweet shared on social media yesterday (Sunday 3 November 2019).

"A report was received following the Everton v Tottenham Hotspur match that the post was on Twitter.

"Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime in any form and is working to identify and bring to justice anyone found responsible for committing a hate crime."
