Vile Scots killer died of ‘natural causes’ after 44 years behind bars

A killer deemed one of Scotland’s most dangerous prisoners died of “natural causes” after spending 44 years behind bars.

John Caughey, 65, was jailed for the brutal murder of Margaret Hunter, 43, in 1975.

He battered the mum of four with a piece of wood before strangling her after she taunted him about his failed marriage while they were having sex.

Caughey, originally of Grangemouth, left Margaret’s naked body on an isolated road near the town and tried to escape by stealing a car after assaulting and abducting a female taxi driver.

He was jailed for life for her murder but was never released and died in HMP Glenochil in 2019.

After a fatal accident inquiry in Stirling, Sheriff William Gilchrist wrote: “Mr Caughey’s death was as a result of natural causes and the circumstances of his death raise no issues of public concern.”

Axe killer Robert Mone, 72, is believed to be Scotland’s longest-serving prisoner, having spent more than 50 years behind bars.
