Viktor Gyokeres responds to playoff heartbreak as Everton transfer links ramp up

Everton-linked Viktor Gyokeres has broken his silence for the first time since Coventry City's agonising defeat to Luton Town in the Championship playoff final.

The Hatters completed their path to the Premier League on penalties as Fankaty Dabo's miss from 12 yards booked Rob Edwards' side into the English top-flight.

Gyokeres assisted Gustavo Hamer's equaliser in the second-half before the two sides couldn't be separated after 120 minutes. After 11 perfect penalties, the Sky Blues right-back blazed over. The Blues have been increasingly linked with the Coventry star after the Swede took the second tier by storm scoring 21 goals and notching 12 assists.

JOE THOMAS: It is time for change at Everton and survival cannot hide the truth

SPECIAL REPORT: The inside story of how Sean Dyche saved Everton from relegation

Taking to Instagram on Monday, he said: "Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fall."

The Independent reported that the Blues are "long-term admirers" of the 24-year-old. Although it remains to be seen whether the interest is realistic with the likely inflated prices.

Since his arrival, Sean Dyche has had to manage with Neal Maupay and Ellis Simms as his strike options after a number of injury troubles for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The talisman was injured during the former Burnley boss' first game in charge against Arsenal and managed just six outings - scoring once during the 2-2 draw with Leicester City - before being forced off at half-time against Wolves forcing him out of the final day win.

Speaking after their agonising defeat, Coventry boss Mark Robins dismissed talk of the departures of both Gyokeres and Hamer.

"I don't think that's really a question for now," he said. "I think we've got to sit and think about this and let it sink in and reflect on it. But again, you use this as fuel to come back stronger, I think.

"If you can't do that, then you're in the wrong sport, you're in the wrong game. We have to try and use that to galvanise us to go again."
